The Greatest Gift
(From Christian Poems by Sister Dawn Dove)
I looked upon a Christmas tree
With gifts arranged below
All wrapped in paper, red and green
And tied with golden bow
And thought about the greatest gift
The world has ever known
Almighty God come down to earth
To seek and save His own
He could have come a royal King
On throne of purest gold
While nobles came from far and wide
His Glory to behold
Or e’en a Child in finest clothes
Of velvet trimmed with lace
With satin sheets and pillow soft
Beneath His lovely face
But, no, He came a tender Babe
To simple folks instead
A humble stable for His home
With shepherds ‘round His bed
As Wisemen followed yonder star
Then bowed with bended knee
The Mighty God came robed in flesh
That all the world might see
No parcel ‘neath a Christmas tree
All trimmed with golden bow
But God-with-us, Immanuel
Alight with Heaven's glow
Is still the greatest gift to man
He, born that Christmas night
To bring to us God’s peace and joy
And be the world’s true Light
